'Impossible': Man City star Kyle Walker couldn't resist cheeky dig when asked Sheffield Wednesday question

Kyle Walker has issued a small dig at Sheffield Wednesday on a recent podcast.

Born in Sheffield, Kyle Walker joined Sheffield United’s academy at seven years old.

The defender managed only a couple of appearances before he caught Tottenham Hotspur’s eye, but was later loaned back to his boyhood club.

Walker left his home town for good in 2010, but has still managed to dig at Sheffield Wednesday 14 years later.

Kyle Walker digs out Sheffield Wednesday

When asked who he supported as a child on You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast, the 34-year-old said: “Sheffield United. It was never going to be Sheffield Wednesday, no. Impossible. My dad’s a Leeds fan though.”

Walker only ever got to play in one match against the Owls though, coming his second spell at Bramall Lane.

Wednesday were beaten by the Blades in September 2009, with the hosts taking a 3-0 lead inside 15 minutes.

The visitors did look likely to stage a tremendous comeback though, with Marcus Tudgay and Etienne Esajas netting to pull two back.

Wednesday were unable to equalise though and were forced to take their first derby defeat in three years, while they didn’t lose again until 2017.

Walker has since gone onto win six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and the Champions League at Manchester City.

Yorkshire breeds brilliant footballers

He is one of many brilliant footballers born in Sheffield, with the likes of Harry Maguire and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also born in the area.

Jamie Vardy is one player who started his career at Middlewood Road, but was released when he was 16. He has made his support for Wednesday very clear though, as he has gone onto shine for Leicester and England over the years.

Yorkshire really seems to be the hub of some excellent footballers, and Wednesday will be hoping they see some future stars coming through under Danny Rohl now.
