Report: Sheffield Wednesday rivalling Championship clubs for permanent signing of Ghanaian ace

Sheffield Wednesday have joined the race to sign this Ghanaian midfielder currently playing in Europe.

Sheffield Wednesday appear to have quickly drawn up a list of summer transfer targets, and it looks like Danny Rohl may soon have his first signing.

Free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer looks set to join following his Watford release in May, potentially meaning that Cameron Dawson is leaving Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

The Owls remain keen on James Beadle, with Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda also wanted back at Hillsborough for next season.

Other names linked ahead of the summer transfer window opening on June 14th include Ovie Ejaria, Karamoko Dembele, Duncan McGuire, Charlie Goode, and Mika Biereth.

And now there’s another name on the Owls’ transfer radar; Elfsborg’s Ghanaian midfielder Michael Baidoo.

An emerging report from Swedish outlet FotbollDirekt says that Sheffield Wednesday have joined the race to sign Baidoo this summer.

Who is Sheffield Wednesday target Michael Baidoo

Baidoo, 25, currently plays for Swedish Allsvenskan side Elfsborg, who currently sit in 9th place of the Swedish top flight table.

Central midfielder Baidoo has started the season in fine form having scored four and assisted three more in 12 league appearances so far.

Last time round, Baidoo scored five and assisted six in 28 Allsvenskan appearances, with this season now being his third with Elfsborg.

Born in Accra, Baidoo has represented Ghana at U20 level in the past, starting his career with Danish outfit FC Midtjylland, then having spells with Jerv and Sandnes in Norway before joining Elfsborg in 2022.

In 69 appearances for his current club, Baidoo has 18 goals and 12 assists.

Where would Michael Baidoo fit in at Sheffield Wednesday

Watching his highlights above, it’s clear to see the type of player Baidoo is; he’s a goal-scoring midfielder who can burst up and down the pitch, and be clinical in both boxes.

What seems most impressive is his finishing ability; for a midfielder, he shows great composure and awareness in front of goal, with a lot of his goals coming from close range.

Rohl really doesn’t have any goal-scoring central midfielders in his ranks and with the likes of Will Vaulks out of contract, and Jeff Hendrick and Momo Diaby having left, an already-depleted midfield department is now even thinner.

So midfielders are needed, and younger ones too with this current Owls side ageing. Baidoo fits the bill in that sense, and the fact that he could add goals to the side is a bonus.

What’s more is that he’s shown with his runs from deep and his runs at goal that he’s someone with pace and energy and that will serve him well in a Rohl-style set up.

Sheffield Wednesday would have to fend off strong competition for the signing with Luton Town, Hull City, and Middlesbrough among the other teams keen.

But if the Owls can win the race for Baidoo, who’d cost a fee this summer with his contract out in 2025, it would be a very exciting signing indeed.
