U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's shifting explanations for why his properties flew controversial flags following the Capitol riots don't pass the smell test.

That's according to a new analysis published Wednesday in the Washington Post that highlighted what it called "major discrepancies" in the conservative justice's explanations for why an upside-down American flag flew outside his Fairfax County, Virginia, home — the same symbol carried by supporters of former President Donald Trump during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attacks.

The Alitos have said the justice's wife hung the upside-down flag in the weeks after Jan. 6 following a dispute with a neighbor. Martha-Ann Alito told a Post reporter she flew the flag as an "international sign of distress" stemming from the dispute.

The Post reports this account doesn't align with police documents, a neighbor's account of what happened, and other details.

For starters, Martha-Ann Alito said she felt upset over an obscene anti-Trump sign within 50 feet of a school bus stop.

But the Washington Post found that schools were remote learning at the time due to the pandemic, and students only returned to the classroom after the flag flew. What's more, the bus stop was reportedly moved before the neighbor dispute.

Additionally, Justice Alito has said the neighbor and her boyfriend at the time instigated the dispute, writing in letters to Congress that they had a sign that personally attacked his wife.

But photos obtained by the Post showed the signs didn't mention Martha-Ann Alito. And of the three signs, only one could realistically have been interpreted as a reference to the Alitos — "You are Complicit."

The neighbors, however, said it was directed at Republicans who they felt were complicit in the riots on Jan. 6.
