The WNBA has received a ton of attention in recent days after a hard foul by Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter on Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.
Current and former NBA players have weighed in on the foul and the way Clark is being treated in the WNBA. And ESPN First Take recently debated Clark’s place in the league and how veterans feel about her.
South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley is glad to see the league getting some added attention, but she believes that the W as a whole needs more media coverage instead of “talking heads” simply focusing on Caitlin Clark and the way she’s being treated.
“Hope all the ‘just talking heads’ are tuned into @WNBA games tonite and tomorrow and the next nite and so on…..so they can equip themselves with a deeper sense of this league,” Dawn Staley posted on Twitter. “And all of these opinions are great but let it come from watching the entire league.”
Staley would like to see the entire league be talked about and broken down, not just Caitlin Clark.
The saying goes that any attention is good attention, and while Caitlin Clark has certainly been good for the league, Staley wants to see other players get their due, too.
A’ja Wilson becomes first player in WNBA history to accomplish historic feat
It’s interesting that Dawn Staley’s tweet came on the same night that one of her former players made WNBA history.
Former South Carolina star A’ja Wilson has already accomplished some impressive feats during her prolific basketball career. The two-time WNBA MVP has not only won two league titles, she’s also been named an All-Star five times, among numerous other honors. And she continues to add to her legacy every night she steps foot on the floor. On Wednesday evening, in the Aces 95-81 victory over the Dallas Wings, Wilson stuffed the stat sheet with historic numbers.
She became the first player in WNBA history with 35 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals in a game. Once the smoke had cleared, the former South Carolina star had 36 points, 12 rebounds, six steals, and one block. Not only that, she did it while shooting 68% from the field.
Prior to playing in the WNBA, A’ja Wilson played for Dawn Staley at South Carolina, leading the Gamecocks to their first national championship. She was drafted No. 1 overall in the WNBA Draft and has excelled ever since she stepped onto the court in the WNBA as a rookie.
