Whether Alexis Mac Allister really has a Liverpool release clause after links to Real Madrid

Liverpool couldn’t have asked for much more from Alexis Mac Allister in his first season with the club.

The Reds signed Mac Allister last June in the hope that he could kick on from an impressive year with Brighton and Argentina.

And although he took a little while to get going, the 25-year-old ended up being one of Liverpool’s most influential players.

A supreme spell of form over February and March saw Mac Allister hit 11 goal contributions in just 10 games. He was popping up whenever the Reds needed him and driving them towards a title charge.

In the end, that obviously just fell short. But it wasn’t for a lack of trying from Mac Allister. Inevitably, this eye-catching form has led to suggestions that Real Madrid will try to prise him away from Anfield.

Does Alexis Mac Allister have a Liverpool release clause?

Whenever signing players from South America, there is always a worry that they’ll get their heads turned by one of the La Liga giants.

Liverpool have been here several times before. Over the years they’ve lost Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Javier Mascherano to Barcelona.

Luckily for the Reds, Barca are in dire financial straits right now. Although that reportedly hasn’t stopped them from pursuing a move for Luis Diaz.

At the other side of the El Clasico rivalry, Real Madrid could not be in better health. Fresh off the back of winning a 15th Champions League title, they’ve just added Kylian Mbappe to their squad.

Claims that they’re trying to tempt Mac Allister to join Mbappe have included suggestions that Liverpool’s No.10 has a release clause of around £60m.

Obviously concerned, Liverpool supporters put this question to journalist James Pearce in a Q&A with The Athletic.

“Liverpool don’t allow release clauses in contracts,” says Pearce. “You can go right back to when Emre Can was in talks over a new deal.

“He wanted a release clause, Liverpool dismissed the idea, and he ended up leaving as a free agent when his contract expired in the summer of 2018. Mac Allister is going nowhere.”

What Alexis Mac Allister has said about joining Real Madrid

Although it’s obviously good news that no clause can be triggered which would allow Mac Allister to leave, that doesn’t mean Madrid won’t try.

Once Los Blancos set their sights on a player, they usually get them. This is something Liverpool look set to learn again, as they battle Real for Leny Yoro.

The most important thing is that Mac Allister himself is happy and not looking to leave.

Thankfully, that looks like being the situation. Shortly after the links with Madrid appeared, Mac Allister was asked directly about his thoughts on joining the European champions.

“I don’t talk about assumptions,” the World Cup winner responded. “I’m very happy at Liverpool.”

That along with Pearce’s confirmation is enough evidence we need. Macca will be at Liverpool next season.
