Hungary manager explains what shocked him about Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai’s performance against Ireland

Liverpool players have been gearing up for summer tournaments with international friendly action.

The Reds have a number of players heading to the European Championships especially, with some in action over the past couple of days.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has so far been the pick of the bunch. The right-back scored a lovely goal for England and earned rave reviews from the media.

Alexander-Arnold looks set to travel to Germany with England and play in a midfield role. That will provide Arne Slot with plenty of food for thought as he looks to shape his first ever Liverpool squad.

If Trent is to play in midfield, it will be fascinating to see who plays alongside him. And if the academy graduate is in a good moment, then one of his potential partners in the Liverpool midfield is having quite the opposite time of it.

Hungary manager disappointed with Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai has been a superstar for the Hungary national team. The footballing poster boy of his nation, the Magyars have been on a brilliant unbeaten run under the Liverpool man’s captaincy.

As they head into the Euros, many would have Hungary down as a bit of a dark horse. Szoboszlai has even been tipped to be a star of the tournament.

However, the Liverpool man’s form really tailed off towards the end of the season. Having had a solid debut campaign, he ended it regularly being left on the bench by Jurgen Klopp. And, unfortunately, that form seems to have carried on into the summer.

Making his first start since April 24th, the £60m signing from RB Leipzig did get the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 loss against Caoimhin Kelleher’s Ireland.

But speaking to Hungarian outlet Nemzeti Sport after the game, manager Marco Rossi suggested that he had been far from impressed by Szoboszlai’s showing.

“This time his [Szoboszlai’s] game was mediocre, Roland Sallai had a better day this time,” Rossi claimed.

“Of course, he had good solutions, as always, but he also made unexpected mistakes that are not typical of him – but mistakes happen in every footballer’s life.”

Dominik Szoboszlai must show improvement

It’s hard to be too upset with the way Szoboszlai trailed off this season. After starting the campaign so well, you can see that he clearly has a lot to offer Liverpool.

At 23 his best days are firmly in the future and hopefully much of that can be realised at Anfield.

Nevertheless, it is a little worrying how steeply Szoboszlai has fallen off a cliff.

Even when he’s been struggling a little for Liverpool, he’s always produced when needed for Hungary. That has now begun to turn, too.

It obviously is not make or break or anything like that for Szoboszlai, but he does need to have a good tournament in Germany.

If he can come back to the AXA Training Centre having done himself justice, hopefully he can then hit the ground running again. Continue to struggle though, and Szoboszlai will become a worry.
