National Fish and Chip Day brought forward to coincide with D-Day anniversary, Newark fish and chip shop shop Angell’s Fisheries on Barnbygate to mark the occasion

Today will be 80 years since the events of D-Day and a takeaway is marking the occasion with special discounts and giveaways.

It is also National Fish and Chip Day, which usually takes place on the first Friday in June, but has been brought forward this year to coincide with the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The D-Day landings in Normandy are remembered as the largest invasion in military history, bringing together land, air and sea forces, in what is seen as a turning point in the second world war.

Fish and chips played a vital role during the war, being one of the only dishes that was not rationed, and so National Fish and Chip Day is coinciding with this historic date.

Angell’s Fisheries on Barnbygate is a popular spot with residents and has been preparing to mark the occasion in a number of different ways

Owner, Sophie Angell, said: "Our charming little shop dates back to 1914 and is known to be Newark's oldest chippy, serving the town through two world wars.

“We look forward to welcoming new and regular faces on this special occasion, making it a day to remember."

The fish and chip shop wanted to honour the sacrifices of the second world war generation and so will be serving a traditional chippy lunch to members of the charity Newark Dementia Carers Group.

Regular customers will also be in for a treat as the cost of a fish supper is reduced to just £5 and a portion of chips is only 80p for today only.

From 5pm there will also be some entertainment at the shop with Laura Alice Vintage Vocalist welcoming customers with classic 1940's wartime music.

The takeaway has also been holding a children’s D-Day themed colouring competition, and the winner will receive free fish and chips for their family.

Angell's Fisheries will be open from 11:30am to 8:30pm.
