Major Gers target officially announced elsewhere, takes time to explain controversial choice

The transfer window hasn’t even officially opened and already Rangers links have been popping up all over the globe.

Quite literally.

From Latin America to Eastern Europe and South Africa, there are plenty of names to keep Gers supporters occupied already this summer.

Whilst we can just about guarantee some of the links to Rangers will be miles wide of the mark, others will be substantially closer.

The links to Jose Cordoba certainly fall into the latter camp, with the Panamanian defender now officially taking a decision on his future amid strong links to Rangers.

Cordoba explains Norwich switch

Norwich City have announced the permanent signing of Jose Cordoba from Levski Sofia.

Whilst the Copa America-bound defender hasn’t been snapped at the club’s training ground with the scarf above his head, the deal is now complete.

At least that’s according to the official Canaries website, which has officially confirmed the transfer.

The defender has also been talking about the move and has explained why he chose Carrow Road as his destination.

Rangers were one of a number of clubs linked to Cordoba, with Norwich City, Besiktas, Lille and USG also mentioned in dispatches.

But according to the Panamanian, Norwich’s ‘family’ vibe is exactly what he was looking for.

“I see Norwich is like a family, and I was looking for something like that,” said Cordoba.

“The idea of the club and the feeling went directly to me and I felt that I had to make this choice.”

Sporting director Ben Knapper added: “We’re delighted to welcome José and his family to Norwich City. He is a player we have been tracking for a long time and we think he fits really well with what we’re looking for.

“As a person, he is extremely impressive, and he showed a big desire to join us here and be a part of our great club.

“On the pitch, his combination of technical ability and athleticism gives him a great foundation, and we feel he still has big steps in his development to come.

“Under Johannes’ guidance, along with the rest of our staff, we feel sure we can help him achieve his potential.

“We’re all really excited to work with José.”

Rangers miss out on summer transfer target

Make no mistake, Rangers were targeting Levski star Jose Cordoba this summer.

Nils Koppen and co had identified the 22-year-old left-sided defender ahead of what promises to be a busy window even before the end of the season.

Rangers hosted Cordoba at the 4-1 win over Kilmarnock in May as the club tried to put an Ibrox sweetener on their pursuit.

And it looked to have worked.

For all intents and purposes, for the bulk of May Rangers looked to be leading the Jose Cordoba hunt with the Gers initially closing in on a £2m rising to £3.2m deal.

That was until Norwich City appeared to complicate proceedings.

Rangers then told friendly media that they’d pulled out of a deal with unofficial sounds around the transfer suggesting Levski and Cordoba’s representation were not completely transparent.

In Bulgaria, reports claimed that Levski Sofia did not agree with how Rangers wanted to structure the transfer.

Claiming that Norwich City were willing to stump up more money up front, now Jose Cordoba is officially set to move to Carrow Road and Rangers attentions have shifted elsewhere.

That includes to Argentina, where another left-sided defender is reportedly turning Ibrox heads.
