Report: Liverpool quietly making it known that they want 'composed' player who Henderson thinks is brilliant

Liverpool are continuing to do their due diligence ahead of the transfer window opening.

The Reds have a couple of key areas to address as they look to give Arne Slot the best start possible at the club.

Perhaps top of the list of potential signings should be snaring a new centre-back. Although Liverpool have good options in defence, they still look one player light.

Jamie Carragher demanded a defender be signed this summer, and the Liverpool legend is right to do so. Ibrahima Konate had a poor end to the season and still can’t be fully relied upon.

With Konate disappointing again for France on Wednesday, it’s clear that the Reds need to bring in some strong competition for places.

Liverpool register interest in Levi Colwill

While Konate tends to be the right-sided centre-back for Liverpool, the Reds are interestingly said to be targeting someone to play on the left.

There are plenty of options out there if that is the case. Earlier this week, journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho, for example.

Goncalo Inacio of Sporting is another to have been strongly linked. And while both Pacho and Inacio look like top defenders in the making, there is seemingly a player Liverpool would like above both of them.

Unfortunately, that player is not currently on the market. The man is question is of course Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, who has reportedly come back onto Liverpool’s radar this summer.

According to 90min, Colwill is once again set for showdown talks with a new Chelsea manager. While last year it was Mauricio Pochettino, this time Colwill is said to be seeking assurances over his playing time with Enzo Maresca.

The 21-year-old is reportedly looking for Maresca to tell him that he will be the top choice at left centre-back next season.

Talks between Colwill and his new manager are claimed to be happening soon, with Liverpool keeping a ‘close eye’ on how the situation develops.

The Reds are said to be ‘well aware; that Colwill is not for sale this summer. The England man leaving Chelsea is said to be ‘highly unlikely.’ Nevertheless, Liverpool are reportedly ‘keen to make their interest known’ in case discussions with Maresca go awry.

Liverpool should move on from Levi Colwill

There is a feeling that as they look for a centre-back signing, Colwill is the one Liverpool really want.

They did not make a defensive addition last summer and that felt largely based on the fact that Colwill was not available.

One year on, and it seems equally unlikely that Liverpool will be able to complete a deal.

Of course, you can understand why the Reds want to bring Colwill to Anfield. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has previously raved about him [TalkSPORT], while Declan Rice called his England teammate ‘composed’ [Football London].

But it’s also clear that chasing Colwill is a losing battle for the Reds.

If these planned talks end up with the Chelsea man dissatisfied, then maybe things will feel different. But for now, we’d urge Liverpool to walk away.
