Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that Germans can be proud of their multi-cultural society, which also includes the national football team.

Some 20 million people living in Germany have a foreign background, and Scholz said in parliament on Thursday that "they are part of our society.

"We can be proud that this is also reflected in our national team. They are all Germans, all our boys," Scholz said.

"We will not allow ourselves to be divided."

Scholz' remarks came as part of a speech on the present security situation in Germany and did not mention a recent survey which revealed that one in five Germans would prefer seeing more white players in the national team.

The survey included in a national team documentary by broadcasters WDR drew sharp criticism from coach Julian Nagelsmann, among others.

WDR said the survey was commissioned because the producers were faced with racist statements about the national team during filming.

Scholz was speaking a week before the kick-off of the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

"Our country will show its best side in this summer of football," the Chancellor pledged.

Scholz said Germans were anticipating good matches and many visiting fans, and added the German security forces were well prepared for the month-long tournament in 10 German cities.

"Don't let the anticipation of this festival of football, of this summer, be taken away from you," he said.
