'It speaks volumes': Journalist claims one Sheffield Wednesday star 'needs some respect on his name'

Sheffield Wednesday fans have been urged to show one ‘important’ player more ‘respect’.

The Sheffield Wednesday squad pulled off some real heroics this season, orchestrated by Danny Rohl.

After what had almost been an underwhelming campaign in League One followed by a disastrous start to their Championship return, the players were transformed and put on some spectacular performances to ensure survival.

The likes of Marvin Johnson and Pol Valentin really proved their importance, while the likes of James Beadle and Ike Ugbo came in late and made a real impact.

It has been a season that has looked to end a difficult era at Hillsborough, with Rohl’s new contract starting a new one.

There are only a few players that played a key role in the previous era, one of whom is Liam Palmer.

The defender has been with his boyhood club since joining the academy in 1999 and has been a regular in the squad for over a decade.

Palmer’s form didn’t drop off when the pressure hit this year either, playing a key role and going onto score vital goals against Stoke City and Sunderland.

The 32-year-old has since gone onto put pen to paper on a new contract, despite a lot of uncertainty over his future before survival was guaranteed.

Journalist Rob Staton has now heaped praise on Palmer and has claimed he deserves ‘some respect on his name’.

Liam Palmer has become ‘so important’ to Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking on Football Heaven, Staton said: “He’s become so important for Sheffield Wednesday in recent years.

“Last season was a weird season for him because the year before he was lights out unbelievable, basically from week one to the end winning every player of the year award, everything like that and then he had the injury.

“Then it took him a while to get going and then he’s sort of fought his way back into the team and by the end of the season you were thinking he has to play. It doesn’t matter whether it’s centre-half, midfield, whatever.

“He’s so reliable, works his backside off and has more quality than people will ever give him credit for…versatile. He’s just a good egg as well, besides all that on the pitch. He’s so important and needs some respect on his name.

“I think a lot of people respect him, but he’s more than just someone who’s been at Wednesday for a long time. He’s turned himself into a really important player and I think it speaks volumes.”

Liam Palmer’s versatility is his biggest strength

Liam Palmer has racked up over 400 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, but it isn’t just his ability that has made him so important.

The veteran has made half of his appearances from right-back, which is believed to be his natural position.

Hwever, transfermarkt claims he has also made over 60 appearances from both centre-back and right midfield, as well as 42 in defensive midfield, 29 at left-back, 21 in central midfield and four on the left of midfield.

Palmer’s versatility has been vital for the Owls over the years and proves how dedicated and committed he is to the club’s success.

With Wednesday’s squad currently rather depleted, it makes so much sense to keep him on and there is no doubt he could stay at the club for more than the 2024/25 season if he can help out with injuries and suspensions down the line.
