'Far and away': Journalist explains 'the most likely option' for Sheffield Wednesday target Mika Biereth this summer

A Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer target has now been tipped to leave his current club on a permanent deal.

Sheffield Wednesday have a few names on their transfer radar ahead of the summer transfer window opening on June 14th.

The Owls are in desperate need of a positive summer transfer window under manager Danny Rohl, following the club’s struggles during the 2023/24 campaign.

There’s also the likelihood of several key first-team players leaving the club this summer with Di’Shon Bernard and Josh Windass among those out of contract, and yet to decide on the club’s latest offer.

Elsewhere, loan players leaving also opens up gaps in the side, especially in attack; Ian Poveda and Ike Ugbo have seen their loan deals expire and whether or not the Owls can bring them back remains to be seen.

Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday have subsequently been linked with a number of attacking signings, with Arsenal striker Mika Biereth among those to have been mentioned.

Mika Biereth Arsenal future amid Sheffield Wednesday interest

Biereth, 21, was wanted by the Owls in January, but he instead joined Austrian outfit Sturm Graz on loan.

He went on to score five and assist two more in 15 Austrian Bundesliga appearances, helping Graz to win the league title.

The Austrian outfit are keen on a return for Biereth, but it’s been suggested that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta wants to take a closer look at the Danish striker during the pre-season.

Now though, journalist Charles Watts has suggested that Biereth will be allowed to leave this summer, with his contract expiring next year.

Watts said on Inside Arsenal: “I still think that by far and away the most likely option this summer with Mika Biereth is that he goes, just because of his contract situation which was very similar to [Folarin] Balogun.”

Balogun spent the 2022/23 season on loan with Reims in Ligue 1, scoring 21 goals in the league and then earning himself a permanent move to Monaco, with game time at the Emirates Stadium limited at the time.

Can Sheffield Wednesday afford Mika Biereth

Biereth’s stock is certainly high. And given his Arsenal contract situation and the unlikelihood of Biereth working his way into the Gunners’ first-team anytime soon, a permanent sale this summer certainly makes sense for Arsenal.

But previous reports have claimed that Biereth’s transfer value has doubled following his spell with Sturm Graz, with the striker now apparently costing any buying club £5.95million.

That would make him Sheffield Wednesday’s second-most expensive signing of all time and the idea of Dejphon Chansiri spending that amount of any one player this summer seems far-fetched.

A loan deal might have been plausible for the Owls, but a permanent deal not so much given the potential cost of it.

So this latest update may well put a swift end to any Sheffield Wednesday hopes for a Biereth deal this summer.
