East Carolina has lost another important piece to the NCAA Transfer Portal. Shortly after his freshman season, ECU outfielder Bristol Carter has officially entered the portal, On3 has learned.

Carter, a fringe top 100 recruit heading into his freshman season, had some draft interest after his high school career, but he made it to campus at ECU instead. He is an intriguing prospect for the 2026 MLB Draft.

As a freshman at ECU, Carter certainly made an impact. He played in 56 games with 46 starts, primarily playing left field while also making some appearances in center.

In 159 at-bats, Carter hit .346 with two home runs and 31 RBI. He also had seven doubles and one triple, while striking out 23 times compared to 12 walks and six hit by pitches. Though he only stole four bases on the season, Carter has game changing speed and is a serious threat when on base.

Carter had some struggles in left field this season, though he was only charged with one error. Still, he served as ECU’s starting left fielder for the large majority of the season.

In the Greenville Regional, Carter got the nod in the opening game on Friday as ECU’s starting left fielder. He hit No. 6 in the lineup. That would be the last game he started on the weekend, giving way to Luke Nowak in left field. Carter appeared as a defensive replacement during ECU’s blowout victory over Evansville on Sunday evening.

Now, both Carter and Nowak are in the transfer portal. They join a group of recent transfers out of Greenville that includes pitchers Zach Root, Corey Costello and Drew Bryan, and first baseman Cam Clonch. Pitcher Parker Thomas and infielder Isaac Armstrong previously left the program and entered the transfer portal earlier in the season.

ECU is also likely to lose ace Trey Yesavage and outfielder Jacob Jenkins-Cowart to the 2024 MLB Draft. The Pirates could also see pitcher Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman, among others, hear their names called.

The ECU roster is certainly going to look very different next season. The Pirates have a large incoming freshman class, but they could now be forced to look into the portal for an immediate upgrade due to the recent departures.
