Carlos Sainz already ‘very impressed’ by one aspect of Williams team ahead of potential move – journalist

Carlos Sainz will be leaving Ferrari at the end of the season and is running out of teams he could potentially join next year.

Williams have only scored two points this season but have suddenly emerged as one of Carlos Sainz’s best options for the 2025 F1 season.

Speaking on the Inside The Piranha Club Podcast, journalist Rebecca Clancy was speaking about the Spaniard’s potential move to the Grove-based team.

Sainz may not have been too impressed by what he’s seen from James Vowles’s team in 2024.

However, there is a lot of excitement around the direction the team are going in and retaining the services of Alex Albon beyond this season is a real coup.

Carlos Sainz is also said to be very impressed by the Mercedes power unit that Williams will be using during the new set of regulations being introduced to F1 in 2026.

It’s already something Albon suggests could give Williams an advantage over their rivals in the future.

Carlos Sainz very impressed with Mercedes engine amid Williams speculation

One of the key aspects of any new set of regulations in Formula 1 is the power units.

While teams start to understand the nuances of the aerodynamic rules, having the most powerful engine can end up making you an immediate contender.

There are already potential concerns about Renault’s next power unit which Alpine will be using.

Red Bull will also be working with Ford to launch Red Bull Powertrains and Martin Brundle has shared what he’s heard about the current champion’s future offering.

Ferrari have already been very good at developing engines and with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will be a seriously strong outfit.

However, Williams will use Mercedes power units for 2026 and that’s left Sainz impressed ahead of a potential move.

Williams have already made an impact on Sainz’s camp during negotiations.

It’s also understood that a satisfactory offer has been made to Sainz for 2025 although he’s not made a final decision on his future just yet.

Carlos Sainz the key to F1’s driver market

Talking about the new Mercedes power unit for 2026, Clancy said: “Interesting you say about the 2026 program because I was hearing rumours in Monaco that apparently it’s very good which is why Carlos Sainz has been linked with a drive at Williams.

“He’s been shown the potential of that Mercedes 2026 engine and is actually very impressed.

“Williams are apparently very happy with it as well.”

Half of the grid is confirmed for 2025 and the other seats will begin to fall into place once Sainz decides where he wants to drive next year.

The likes of Esteban Ocon and Valtteri Bottas are patiently waiting to see where the Spaniard ends up to see what offers they’ll have on the table.

Williams are unlikely to provide Sainz with a car that can challenge for podiums, let alone wins, in the short-to-medium term.

However, compared to Audi who are taking over a terrible Sauber team and will be tackling their first-ever season in Formula 1 in 2026, it seems like a safer bet.
