Why reported links involving Celtic and Chris Mepham make for interesting reading

Celtic fans will be gripped by transfer fever as their club plot reinforcements to build on the double winning success of 2023/24.

Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah are both wanted back at Parkhead by Brendan Rodgers; meanwhile, Sparta Prague goalkeeper Peter Vindahl Jensen is also on the radar.

Yesterday, news also broke that Celtic have Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham on a list of targets, with the Wales international mooted to be priced at around £8 million.

Now, into the final year of his contract at the Vitality Stadium, a new challenge at the reigning Scottish Premiership champions could be tempting for the 26-year-old; nevertheless, it would require a significant investment from the Bhoys.

However, there is a lesser-known fact that Celtic fans will be intrigued by regarding the pursuit of the defender involving one of his ex-teammates.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Chris Mepham at Bournemouth

Back in 2020/21, Cameron Carter-Vickers was still on the books at Tottenham Hotspur and was farmed out to Bournemouth to spend the campaign.

Lo and behold, Mepham was also at the Cherries at that time and the pair struck up a relationship, albeit their time on the pitch with each other was limited due to respective injuries.

Ultimately, Bournemouth finished sixth in the Sky Bet Championship before being knocked out in the play-off semi-finals by Brentford, producing an unlucky ending given they had been relegated from the Premier League the season previous.

Nevertheless, the fact that there is a history between the pair and plenty of training ground experience makes for interesting reading. Sharing the highs and lows of playing for the same side forms a bond that is hard to disassemble, and they will clearly have an understanding of each other’s style as a result.

Of course, there isn’t definitive evidence to suggest Mepham will end up at Celtic; however, if he did, this may be something to bear in mind heading into 2024/25.
