'I think' - Harry Redknapp is convinced Man Utd-linked manager can emerge as 'favourite' to replace Erik ten Hag on one condition

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes that one Manchester United-linked manager could become the big “favourite” to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag is under contract with Manchester United until 2025 and the Dutchman has seen success during his two seasons in charge at Old Trafford.

The United boss led the Red Devils to the Carabao Cup in his debut campaign at Old Trafford before capturing the FA Cup trophy with the club last season.

However, Ten Hag oversaw a difficult season at the Red Devils and United fell well short of a top-four Premier League challenge.

United finished in eighth place and will miss out on the Champions League for next season, but the Red Devils secured Europa League football thanks to the FA Cup.

Despite his FA Cup triumph in the 2023-24 season, Ten Hag’s long-term future at Old Trafford has been up in the air in recent months.

Redknapp on potential replacement for Ten Hag

Manchester United have been linked with several managers, including Roberto De Zerbi, Mauricio Pochettino and Gareth Southgate.

Roberto De Zerbi is currently a free agent after he left Brighton at the end of the season, while Mauricio Pochettino was sacked from Chelsea in May.

Gareth Southgate, on the other hand, is currently set to take England to Euro 2024 in Germany this summer ahead of his contract expiring in December.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Harry Redknapp has suggested that a “disaster” Euro 2024 campaign could rule Southgate out as the next United manager.

“I think it depends how he does,” he said.

“If we have a disaster in the Euros, I wouldn’t think he’s going to suddenly become Man United manager, if they’re on the horizon.

“I think Gareth has done a good job and he’ll probably hopefully win it and stay on. But if he doesn’t, it depends on how he does.”

Redknapp on how Southgate becomes ‘favourite’

Gareth Southgate has led England to three major international tournaments, but the Three Lions boss has been unable to end his nation’s silverware drought.

England reached the semi-finals on the 2018 World Cup in Russia under Southgate, while the Three Lions fell short in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley against Italy.

The Three Lions’ last outing under Southgate at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar ended in the quarter-finals at the hands of France.

Redknapp has suggested that Southgate would become the “favourite” to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford if he can lead England to victory at Euro 2024.

“If we come away from the tournament not being very successful, then he’s not going to walk in to a new job,” he said.

“The chances are he wouldn’t walk into a Man United.

“And if he does come out as a winner, he’s got great options, and the chances are if the Man United job is available, he’d be favourite.

“If we win it, the country would want to keep him on as England manager, take us to the next World Cup. So, it depends on what comes out of this tournament.”

England, who are one of the tournament favourites, are in Group C for Euro 2024 and will face Slovenia, Serbia and Denmark in the opening stages of the competition.
