The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2024 Oklahoma football season. Fans have been waiting for what feels like forever with this one. The Sooners are finally and officially joining the SEC.

The 2023 season was a rebound one for head coach Brent Venables, getting the program back to its standard. OU went 10-3 in Venables’ second season, now it’s time for year No. 3.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 84 Davon Mitchell

2023 stats: N/A

2024 outlook:

One of the elite additions of the Sooners’ heralded 2024 recruiting class arrived in January and immediately turned heads. Oklahoma’s tight end room looks much different currently than at this time last year.

The biggest question of former four-star Davon Mitchell will be how quickly he can adjust to the college game. Remember he reclassified, graduating a year early from Los Alamitos (Calif.) High School. Patience could be recommended, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

At 6-foot-3, 255 pounds, Mitchell is on the freak side of physical gifts, which have led to comparisons of former Sooner great Jermaine Gresham. Lofty expectations are valid when it comes to his future in Norman.

2024 tight end outlook:

One room that has a totally new look in 2024 is the tight end room. Austin Stogner took nearly every snap last year at tight end. He’s now gone and there are several new faces. Transfers Bauer Sharp and Jake Roberts are expected to lead the way. Sharp was especially impressive in the spring, with Roberts missing all of spring with an injury. OU also brought in highly-touted freshman Davon Mitchell, who by far has the most talent of the group. But don’t forget about Kaden Helms and Kade McIntyre, who both return from injury.
