Clarence Thomas still hasn't coughed up info about 'many gifts' that remain secret: report

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas made national headlines when he — a trip to Indonesia and a northern California "all-male retreat" — but investigative reporters say a slew of valuable perks remain secret.

ProPublica — first to uncover in 2023 the two trips funded by Harlan Crow in 2019 — says Thomas' amendment to his financial disclosure filings Friday may not be the victory for transparent governance it appears at first glance to be.

"There are many gifts Thomas received that he has still not disclosed," ProPublica reported Friday, "Even after the new amendments."

This assessment aligns with newly released data from the oversight group Fix the Court that revealed that out of the approximate $4.7 million Supreme Court justices have received in the past 20 years, .

"Clarence Thomas took in ~$4 million in gifts over the last 20 years (and only disclosed $2.4M worth," wrote Wall Street financier Steven Rattner. "That's a total haul 5.6x larger than the other 16 justices combined.

Thomas' Friday filing — in which he amends his 2019 financial disclosure to include the “inadvertently omitted” trips — spurred a who fear what effect such gifts will have on his judgment in the nation's highest court.

"It’s long past time for there to be a comprehensive criminal investigation," George Conway wrote on X. "What he has taken, and what he has failed to disclose, is beyond belief."

ProPublica reporting aligns with Conway's assessment.

"Legal ethics experts said that Thomas appeared to have violated the law by failing to disclose the trips and gifts," the report notes.
