Exclusive: Key Manchester United backroom staff out of contract with futures hinging on huge Erik ten Hag decision

HITC understands a number of Manchester United’s backroom staff are waiting on the club’s end of season review as their futures are tied to Erik Ten Hag.

United’s end of season review at Old Trafford began just days after their famed FA Cup win over Manchester City at the end of May.

The review, instigated by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is being conducted by the club’s newly established footballing hierarchy including Sir Dave Brailsford, Jean-Claude Blanc – both new board members – and recently appointed technical director Jason Wilcox.

The review is primarily to assess whether the club should stick with Ten Hag or move in a different direction, although many subjects are being covered including the future of club captain Bruno Fernandes.

Ten Hag, who has 12-months left on his current deal, is currently on holiday and sources close to him admit that he is still ‘in the dark’ over his future but is working as if he is still United boss – until he is told otherwise.

Benni McCarthy future in the balance as he waits over contract

HITC can reveal that some of the coaching staff are out of contract and do not know at this point what is going to happen as even Ten Hag can’t tell them.

HITC understands that one of those who does not know what the future has to offer is popular forward’s coach Benni McCarthy.

Like Ten Hag, McCarthy and other staff members are awaiting the outcome of the review and HITC is told by sources close to the club that United WILL reveal the outcome publicly, whether that means Ten Hag stays or goes.

In terms of time scale the club has refused to confirm when they will make an announcement, but expectation is now mid-June.

At that point it will be confirmed whether Manchester United will be looking for a new manager and they have been doing their homework on potential successors – which began a number of weeks ago.

England boss Gareth Southgate is contender to replace Erik Ten Hag

HITC previously revealed in March that England head coach Gareth Southgate is someone who Man United held in high regard, and we understand that remains the case.

Southgate himself has publicly refused to comment on his future when quizzed about the links with Manchester United, insisting his only focus is on Euro 2024.

“There are two things from my point of view,” Southgate said earlier this year at an England press conference.

“One is that I’m the England manager. I’ve got one job: to try to deliver a European Championship. Clearly, before that, two important games this week.

“The second thing is United have a manager. It’s always completely disrespectful when there’s any speculation about a manager that’s in place.”
