Cambridge’s giraffes ready to find a new home after 10-week trail

After 10 weeks of entertaining residents and visitors of Cambridge, the giraffe sculptures which made up the Cambridge Standing Tall art trail have been herded off the streets ready to go under the hammer at a charity auction on 19 June at the Graduate Cambridge.

The trail, supported by the Cambridge Independent, encouraged residents and visitors alike to look up at the art on offer while supporting Break, a charity working in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire to raise aspirations of the county’s young care leavers.

The sculptures have been enjoyed by thousands of people across Cambridge – and we feature some of the pictures you’ve shared here.

Consisting of 31 decorated giraffe sculptures standing at 2.3 metres, each sponsored by a local business and designed by professional artists, there were also more than 60 ‘Mini Gs’, created by local schools and community groups, which will be returned to them after the trail.

Peter Marron, Break project manager, said: “One of the many objectives for the trail is to bring the community together and it’s been wonderful to see so many people come out to find our gentle giants.

“Each sculpture is completely unique thanks to the incredible artists who have created some amazing designs. It’s been brilliant to see everyone of all ages enjoy them. We’re looking forward to seeing what’s next for the giraffes.

“The auction is the perfect opportunity to be able to take home an original piece of art and a memento of another fantastic trail all whilst supporting Break.”

Funds raised from the trail and the auction will go towards work with young care leavers. The auction will be hosted by auctioneer Natasha Raskin Sharp, from BBC programmes such as Bargain Hunt, Flog it! and Antiques Road Trip, and guests will enjoy a drinks reception and BBQ surrounded by all the giraffes in the hotel’s gardens.

The charity would love to know people’s experiences of the trail. Anyone who completes the short survey can be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a £50 Love Cambridge voucher or a six-person, self-guided punt courtesy of Scudamore’s Punting Company.
