'Amazing': Gary McAllister seriously impressed by £35m Liverpool player; suggests he could be the next captain

Being the captain of Liverpool is one of the biggest honours in football and Gary McAllister thinks one current Reds star is making a case to take over from Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds have had some huge names and figures as skipper over the years, with the likes of Steven Gerrard being synonymous with the armband at Anfield.

Right now, Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk is the man tasked with leading Liverpool. That is expected to continue under Arne Slot as well.

Of course, all the best teams in the world have a number of leaders within the squad.

And speaking about potential captains in the future, former Red Gary McAllister has suggested current midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister, is showing good signs.

Alexis Mac Allister tipped to be captain material at Liverpool

Speaking on The Redmen TV YouTube channel, McAllister admitted he believes Argentinian star McAllister can be a real leader for Liverpool.

“I think, you know, he is obviously an experienced player. He played at Brighton and he has played in our league and he has now the season under his belt,” McAllister said.

“He’s obviously a World Cup winner and I just think the fact he scored a couple of fantastic goals and I think in some of the tight games when we were still involved, when there was still talk about quadruples and trebles, he was coming up with some amazing passes and moments in matches when you needed some.

“So, I think he will become a natural leader someday. I think he has taken that upon himself. He is not the captain of the side, but he is starting to lead and lead things in the middle of the park.”

One of Klopp’s last but best signings

The summarisation here from McAllister is very much on point and when you look at the £35m Liverpool paid to sign Mac Allister, it’s quite the signing.

As is mentioned here, he has come up with big moments in big games when Liverpool have needed him and he improved as the season went on.

Mac Allister will be vital under Arne Slot as well you feel.

His calmness in possession but the way he plays the game with a tenacity and bite is typical of the Argentina side that won the World Cup.

Jurgen Klopp, then, has left Liverpool with a top player for years to come.
