Southampton now 'eyeing' summer transfer swoop for Premier League goalkeeper - journalist

Southampton are reportedly ‘eyeing’ a summer transfer swoop for this Premier League goalkeeper.

Southampton are returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking, after Russell Martin steered the Saints to promotion via the play-offs.

Southampton spent just one season in the Championship. At times, it was a mixed campaign for Martin and his side, and he’ll know that he has plenty of work to do in the summer transfer window.

The window officially opens for business on June 14th and it looks like the Saints have quickly drawn up a list of summer transfer targets.

Several names are linked with potential moves to St Mary’s, including Villarreal striker Ben Brereton Diaz, with the Saints also desperate to re-sign loan star Flynn Downes from West Ham.

Elsewhere, there’s also several names linked with moves away from the club this summer, including Che Adams and Kyle Walker-Peters among others.

Now though, there’s a new name on the Saints’ transfer radar; Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele.

Southampton ‘eyeing’ Jason Steele transfer swoop

Southampton need to bolster their goalkeeping ranks this summer with Alex McCarthy currently out of contract at the end of this month.

The Saints recently revealed via their retained list that they remain in talks with McCarthy over a potential new deal, along with Adams.

But journalist Martin Sanders has now revealed on X that Southampton are ‘eyeing’ a summer transfer deal for Brighton goalkeeper Steele.

The 33-year-old, formerly of Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, and Sunderland, featured 17 times in the Premier League last season, keeping two clean sheets and conceding 34 goals.

Jason Steele swoop could mean one player exit at Southampton

Steele arriving would certainly bolster the Saints’ goalkeeping ranks with some experience; he’s got 358 career appearances to his name, with 91 clean sheets.

He and Gavin Bazunu will likely battle for the no.1 spot next time round, should Steele arrive, and it could also mean that McCarthy moves on.

McCarthy has some attractive options opening up for him ahead of the summer transfer window and this latest claim about Steele may suggest that McCarthy is set to leave this summer.

Steele could be a worthy replacing for the experienced McCarthy; Steele has often been a no.2, but his recent emergence as Brighton no.1 may suggest that he still has a lot to offer.

But Southampton still need to add some more Premier League quality, and maybe a touch of youth too, in what will surely be a busy transfer window for the Saints.
