Nigel Farage has called the upcoming vote on July 4 the “immigration election” following his announcement to run as leader of Reform UK in the General Election.
Addressing crowds in the seaside town of Clacton-on-Sea, Farage said a Reform Government would “freeze non-essential migration”.
He added this would “reverse long-standing wage depression and save Britain’s public services from the burden of unlimited demand.”
Both major political parties have pledged to lower migration, which stood at around 685,000 in 2023.
Farage continued to say that he would “never apologise for championing Britain and putting its people first”.
He continued: “It is time for a change.
“Voters understand that [Keir] Starmer’s Labour is just the different side of the same grubby coin to Sunak’s Tories.
“The electorate must be given the confidence that a viable alternative exists.”
Immigration was named in a YouGov poll as a top issue by 27 per cent of voters.
Among Conservative voters, immigration is still the main key issue of concern although negative sentiment around immigration has somewhat eased over recent years.
However among Labour voters, immigration is not seen as an issue and if Labour wins the coming General Election, this will be the first-ever Government with a majority pro-immigration support base.
