Report: 'Unsung hero' could now leave Newcastle for £15m despite how much Eddie Howe likes him

Newcastle United may need to sell players before they can buy this summer.

Indeed, it was a prospect first raised back in January amid FFP restrictions at Newcastle, albeit there is reportedly hope of a big rebuild.

Eddie Howe was warned that selling either of Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes would set the club back amid their links with a move away, while the linked-away Kieran Trippier has now suggested he will be staying.

Miguel Almiron is also thought to want continue his career at St James’ Park, meaning the club may need to sell other players in an effort to raise funds.

Yankuba Minteh has recently been touted for an exit amid reports Liverpool are keen on the £40m-rated star.

The 19-year-old may not be the only player attracting interest, either.

In fact, Sean Longstaff – hailed by Howe as Newcastle’s “unsung hero” – last season is thought to have admirers within the Premier League.

Leicester are now preparing a £15m bid to sign Sean Longstaff

According to the Sunday Mirror (page 73) on 09/06/2024, newly promoted Leicester are interested in the midfielder and are preparing a £15m offer.

The Foxes are said to have been tracking the 26-year-old, who will be out of contract next summer, for several months now.

The report reiterates just how much Howe rates Longstaff but selling an academy product would represent ‘pure profit’ on the club’s balance sheet, which may make it tempting for Newcastle.

Sean Longstaff would be missed at Newcastle

Longstaff is not without his frustrations but was a key player in the 2022/23 campaign and chipped in with three game-winning goals last season.

Having played through the pain barrier at times, that kind of commitment simply cannot be bought.

In an ideal world, Howe wouldn’t have had to him start him so regularly. Injuries and suspensions, however, saw Longstaff called consistently called upon during a chaotic campaign, which perhaps explains some of the reasonably poor performances.

Pure profit is hard to ignore amid FFP complications, however.

If Newcastle can bank £15m for a player out of contract next summer anyway, it has to be considered.
