Wisbech Town frustrated at home but Wimblington flying high

Wisbech Town were frustrated as they were held to a draw at home to bottom side Old Leysians on Saturday.

James Williams’ men are in sixth place in the Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division One after eight games and 79 points from the top after earning 17 points against the side from Cambridge.

After being asked to bat, Wisbech lost opener Danny Haynes for just four, but this paved the way for wicket keeper Josh Bowers, who hit a magnificent 103 from 156 balls, including 13 fours.

He was backed up by other opener Williams, who scored 25 and by the evergreen Gary Freear, who hit 79 from 105 balls, with eight of them fours.

Jamie Seabrook hit three fours and a six in a quickfire 22 from 12 balls and George Gowler made ten as Wisbech ended on 275-8 from 58 overs.

In reply, Old Leysians never looked like chasing the big target but managed to hang on for a draw, scoring 138-8 from 52 overs, Gowler the pick of the bowlers with 4-29 from 13 overs, Josh Porter taking 3-32 from 11 and Freear 1-7 from six.

Gary Freear hit 79 on Saturday

In Division Two, March Town are just outside the relegation zone after being thrashed at home by a Kimbolton side who had previously lost all five matches this season.

The home side put the visitors into bat and they registered 221-8 from 50 overs, before bowling March out for a meagre 97 from 30.3 overs.

Wisbech Town 2nd are second in CCA Senior League Division One after a 45-run win at Thriplow.

After being asked to bat, Wisbech were 210 all out from 45 overs, Pieter Jacobs hitting nine fours and seven sixes as he raced to 96 from just 62 balls before being caught out.

George Gowler took 4-29 on Saturday

He was supported by opener and captain Dom Stannard who scored 40 from 64 balls, Jack Woollard with 19, wicket keeper Thomas Hoyle with 17, Chris Clark with 11 and Sam Albutt with 10.

The home side were then bowled out for 165 from 42.4 overs, Clark taking an impressive 5-25 from nine, Woollard 2-12 from four, Adam Gardner 2-31 off nine and Jacobs 1-29.

In CCA Division Two, Chatteris beat visitors Milton by seven wickets. Milton elected to bat and were 155 all out from 38.5 overs before Chatteris knocked off 162-3 from 41.1 overs.

Robert Kemp scored 53 from just 40 balls on Saturday

March Town 2nd lost by eight wickets at Little Shelford in CCA Senior Three. After being asked to bat, March were 107 all out from 36.3 overs, and then the home side raced to 111-2 from 21 overs.

Wisbech Town 3rd lost by 30 runs at Over & Willingham in CCA Junior Three North. The home side were asked to bat and made 171 all out from 36.1 overs, Amber Crossley-King taking 3-16 from eight, Shez Butt 3-21 from 6.1, Oliver Overland 3-33 from eight and John Mallett 1-22.

In reply, only Tom Freear and Mark Buttriss got to grips with the home attack as Wisbech were bowled out for 141 runs from 32 overs.

Martin Woollard top scored with 62 for Wisbech 4th on Saturday

Batting at six, Freear scored 47 from 35 balls, including nine fours and a six. At number seven, Buttriss got 47 from 34 balls, with six fours and three sixes. Of the other batsmen, only Tom Buck with 19 made double figures.

Wimblington are flying high at the top of Four North after a 36-run win at Fordham. After being put into bat, the visitors were 170 all out from 40 overs, Jason Bullman (54) and opener Robert Kemp (53) both hitting half centuries.

Bullman hit nine fours from his 85 balls and Kemp ten fours from his 40 balls. They were backed up by captain Kris Judge with 19.

The home team were soon in trouble at 9-2 and never really recovered as they managed 134 all out from 35.2 overs, Poppy Cole taking 3-28 from six, Paul King 2-11 from three, Bullman 2-17 from 4.5 and Leon Walker 2-25 from six.

In the same division, Chatteris 2nd are bottom after losing by three wickets at Cambridge Tamil Sangam. After electing to bat, the visitors were 90 all out from 26.5 overs, Liam Boxall top scoring with 36 and opener and captain Oli Bailey getting 21.

In reply, the home team made hard work of it but reached 91-7 from 31.1 overs, Andrew Wool taking 2-15 from eight and Jago Pearson 2-33 from eight.

Finally, Wisbech 4th won by 69 runs at home to Longstanton Grasshoppers 2nd in Five North and rise to third place.

After electing to bat, Wisbech made 260-6 from 40 overs, captain and opener Martin Woollard top scoring with 62, wicket keeper Elliott Peck hitting 55 not out, Amrish Bhatt 50, Archie Grange-Hall 29 and Jay Modhvadia 17 not out.

Grasshoppers were then 191-8 from 40 overs, Chris Middleton taking 4-17 from five, Bhatt 2-13 from eight, Ethan Wells 1-24 and Richard Cable 1-40.
