‘Extraordinary’ Liverpool player could have his best season yet under Arne Slot after latest feat - opinion

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot will undoubtedly be very excited to start working with his new group of players.

The Dutchman has taken over in the Anfield dugout from Jurgen Klopp, and definitely has big boots to fill given the job that his predecessor did.

But Slot will be backed by the supporters and indeed his squad, with Trent Alexander-Arnold having already backed the decision to bring him in.

But the manager will be slow in getting to know his players due to many of them taking part in Euro 2024 this summer.

That has certainly been the case for Andy Robertson, who has yet to speak with Slot given his focus on Scotland’s aims in Germany.

Darwin Nunez is dividing opinion at Liverpool

The new boss will do his utmost to get the very best out of the current crop, with Darwin Nunez definitely set to be firmly in his focus.

Even though the Uruguayan international has become somewhat of a cult hero at Anfield, has failed to fulfil his potential thus far.

A club-record fee of £85million was splashed out for his services in June 2022, with Nunez going on to register 33 goals from his 96 appearances in red so far. Notably, he fired in 48 goals in 85 Benfica games before the move.

He has scored several important goals and produced many fine finishes, but there is still a lot about his game that will worry the Liverpool supporters and indeed incoming manager Slot.

There is, of course, time to improve, although Anfield legend Robbie Fowler does not believe the attacker will ever reach the levels that he needs to.

Importantly for Nunez, however, Slot appreciates the player’s ‘extraordinary’ attributes, with the Uruguayan definitely able to fine-tune his game with hard work on the training ground ahead of the new season.

Arne Slot can help Darwin Nunez deliver his best season yet

Nunez banged in 34 goals for Benfica in the 2021/22 season, but followed that up with just 15 in his debut season on Merseyside.

Last time out, the forward raised his tally to 18, with that improved total definitely helped by more minutes at central forward.

Klopp often played Nunez on the left-hand side of attack, but as proven for Benfica and his country, and at times with the Reds, the Uruguay star thrives centrally.

His comfort levels there became apparent in his latest international appearance, with the Anfield star grabbing a hat-trick in a 4-0 friendly win over Mexico.

Crucially, his national team manager Marcelo Bielsa played Nunez centrally in a 4-2-3-1 formation, which should provide even more excitement among Liverpool fans given that Slot heavily favoured the same formation at previous clubs AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord.
