Liverpool should sign player who idolised Steven Gerrard after he was released yesterday - opinion

Liverpool should be in for a busy summer, not least because it is the first transfer window for new manager Arne Slot.

The Dutchman has arrived from Feyenoord, taking over from Jurgen Klopp, who enjoyed plenty of success in terms of transfers.

Now it is Slot’s turn to bring exciting new faces to Anfield, with the boss certain to be backed as he aims to bring silverware to Merseyside.

It remains to be seen exactly what areas he will prioritise, but central midfield and central defence could be looked at given recent developments.

Both Thiago and Joel Matip have left Anfield following the expiry of their contracts, with replacements likely to be needed.

How long does Andy Robertson have left at Liverpool?

But another area of the pitch that Slot could focus on is left-back, with Andy Robertson the current number one there.

The Scot has, however, had injury problems in recent times, with the full-back limited to just 23 league appearances this season due to such issues.

He remains a firm favourite among the Anfield faithful, and while there is a back-up option in Kostas Tsimikas, Slot would be wise to bring in another body.

The Greek certainly wasn’t always entrusted with filling in for Robertson, with Klopp instead turning to centre-back Joe Gomez.

Now 30, the Scotland captain isn’t quite what he used to be, and although he hasn’t yet spoken with Slot, he is still very excited to get going under the new boss.

Liverpool can turn to free agent Ryan Sessegnon

One potential option to succeed Robertson could be right under Liverpool’s nose, with 24-year-old Ryan Sessegnon a suitable candidate for the role.

The left-back burst onto the scene as a teenager with Fulham in 2016, with his performance in West London catching the eye of the Reds staff.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Anfield club regularly scouted the full-back, with Klopp identifying Sessegnon as the ideal replacement for the versatile but ageing James Milner.

In the end, it was indeed Robertson who made the switch to Merseyside, with that £10million transfer set to go down as one of the best in the history of the club.

But a move for Sessegnon could now be revisited given that he has just been released by Tottenham, bringing an end to his miserable spell in North London.

A high-profile move to Anfield could reignite his once-promising career, with the left-back surely keen to get back on the pitch after a campaign massively disrupted by injury.

As revealed on What I Wore, the Englishman is a Liverpool fan, and watched videos of legendary figure Steven Gerrard growing up.

That adoration should force him into giving his all for the Reds, while Slot would be an immediate hit with the board should he snap up a talented player on a free transfer.

The Anfield chiefs, who aren’t exactly big spenders in relative terms, clearly appreciated the defender before, and could now give him a second chance at the big time.

The Reds do appreciate Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, who can play at both left-back and centre-back, but they do not believe they can secure his signature this summer.
