The last leg of the Triple Crown wrapped ran on Saturday evening, and we saw another upset in one of the top events in horse racing. A month after Mystik Dan won the 150th Kentucky Derby at 18/1 odds, another double-digit odds horse crossed the finish line first at the Belmont Stakes.

Dornoch won the 156th Belmont Stakes at 17/1.

The thoroughbred that finished in 10th place in the Kentucky Derby hugged the rail with jockey Luis Saez in the Belmont Stakes and held off Mindframe for a 1 1/2-length victory. Louisville native Danny Gargan logged his first Triple Crown win as Dornoch finished the race at 2:01.64. Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth is a co-owner of Dornoch and was a very excited man in the winner’s circle.

I would put it right up there with winning on the biggest stage. Horse racing is the most underrated sport in the world, bar none. It’s the biggest game: You get the Derby, the Preakness, the Belmont. We just won the Belmont,” Werth said. “This is as good as it gets in horse racing. It’s as good as it gets in sports.”

This year’s Belmont Stakes was moved to Saratoga due to Belmont undergoing a $455 million reconstruction. The race will not return to Belmont until 2026. Due to the track’s layout at Saratoga, the 1 1/2 mile race was shortened to 1 1/4 mile. That is the same distance as the Kentucky Derby.

Dornoch paid $37.40 to win, $17.60 to place and $8.10 to show. Mindframe paid $6.80 to place and $4.20 to show. Sierra Leone paid $2.60 to show. A $1 exacta paid $163.25 and a $0.50 trifecta paid $473.

Mystik Dan and Preakness winner Seize the Grey did not threaten finishing towards the bottom of the 10-horse race.
