North Carolina is headed to the Men’s College World Series for the first time since 2018 after sweeping West Virginia in two games at the Chapel Hill Super Regional.

Saturday’s 2-1 victory not only stamped UNC’s ticket to Omaha, but it also marks the end of Mountaineers head coach Randy Mazey’s career after more than 30 years in the industry. The Tar Heels headman addressed Mazey’s retirement during his postgame press conference.

“I want to congratulate coach Randy Mazey, first of all, an unbelievable career,” Forbes said. “Give me an opportunity. I’ll never forget it, 2005, he was really good to me. He’s one of the better baseball minds I’ve ever been around. Just talking baseball and I realized quickly how much I could learn from him.

“I made a decision in 2022 about what lens I wanted to coach through and had that mirror conversation. I decided that if I wanted to claim to be a man of faith, I’ve got to coach through that avenue and that’s a decision I made. I’m thankful that I did that because it brings so much joy and I’m really happy for this team. These players, I’ve been fortunate to have been in Omaha, these guys haven’t and my whole goal was I just want to get these guys there. They deserve to be there, so I’m really excited for our team.”

Forbes and Mazey’s paths have crossed over the years, including the brief partnership that Forbes alluded to in 2005 at East Carolina where Mazey, then ECU’s head coach, hired Forbes to his staff before Forbes opted to take a job back at North Carolina 17 days his hire was announced. However, over a decade has past since that occurred but it seems the two have put that behind them as both Forbes and Mazey embraced following the conclusion of Saturday’s Game 2.

As Mazey moves into the next phase of his life, Forbes and the Tar Heels now must shift their focus on Omaha and the 2024 Men’s College World Series.

The ACC has dominated the Super Regionals thus far as UNC, Florida State and Virginia currently make up the first three teams to have punched their tickets to the MCWS next week. All three swept their opponents in their respective Super Regional tournament. Matchups are to be announced as the rest of the final field of eight takes shape.
