The West Virginia Mountaineers trail the North Carolina Tar Heels early in Game 2 of their Super Regional matchup in Chapel Hill. The ‘Heels didn’t hesitate to jump on the board out of the gates, thanks to a solo shot by superstar Vance Honeycutt in the first at bat of the game. WVU trailed UNC 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the first few innings, the broadcast crew chatted it up with Mountaineers head coach Randy Mazey.

WVU coach Randy Mazey shares his thoughts

What was the feeling for the Mountaineers coming into a must-win game on Saturday night?

“We don’t even call it a must win, you know. We just said it yesterday. We talked about playing with house money and I told the guys before the game yesterday. I said go to a place where you can relax and have confidence and have success in your career. And just pretend like you’re playing there. Before today’s game I was like, ‘Do what you did yesterday.’ Because yesterday we played with confidence. And we were relaxed. And grinded out at bats. And so we’re doing today exactly what we did yesterday,” Mazey explained.

“He’s pitching as good as he has all season. We’re excited about the way he’s throwing. I told you he wasn’t going to throw many sliders or changeups for strikes, but he sure is so far,” Mazey explained.

His advice to his batters wasn’t very complicated. “We just need to hit them where the Tar Heels aren’t playing,” the WVU head coach noted.

What’s it been like having his son, Weston Mazey, in the dugout for the Mountaineers magical ride to the 2024 Super Regionals?

“I don’t ever want to coach a game without him in the dugout with me. Believe it or not, he’s a lot smarter than I am. When a guy comes up to the plate, he’ll talk to me about where the infielders are gonna be. And are you gonna run here? That joker will see some plays and say, hey daddy, second base. Let’s go ahead and review that….I think that’s hopefully what’s gonna make him a good player. He’s got a really good feel for the game,” Mazey finished.
