Zero-win F1 star likely to be ‘shown the door’ before 2025 after miserable Canadian GP - BBC commentator

The changeable weather conditions during the Canadian Grand Prix made life incredibly difficult for all 20 drivers.

Both Haas drivers made up ground quickly starting on the wet tyres before falling away while Charles Leclerc’s gamble on the hard tyres simply didn’t work.

However, there was one driver who had an even tougher time during the Canadian Grand PrixLogan Sargeant.

Plenty of drivers had little scrapes and bumps throughout the race but Sargeant was the first retirement from the Grand Prix.

Commentating on the race for BBC Sport, Harry Benjamin was speaking about the young American’s future.

With contracts quickly being confirmed up and down the grid, Logan Sargeant appears to be at greater risk of missing out on a seat next year.

Williams team principal James Vowles has made it clear that he’s assessing his options and someone who has stood on the top step of the podium three times is in his sights.

Logan Sargeant struggles at the Canadian Grand Prix

It speaks volumes about how treacherous the conditions were in Montreal that the likes of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris were struggling to keep their cars on the track.

The track was damp throughout the race with the intermediate tyres the best choice although some drivers were trying to keep them alive for more than 40 laps.

However, the driver who appeared to have the most difficulty keeping his car on the track was Logan Sargeant.

He went straight on at turn six and kissed the barrier with his front wing although he kept the car going and appeared to avoid any serious damage.

It meant that after a positive qualifying session where Sargeant managed to reach Q2, he was once again running last.

Sargeant then had a much bigger accident heading into turn four, hitting the barrier and having a significant impact on the race.

He brought out the safety car which caught Lando Norris who was leading the race at the time and allowed Max Verstappen to retake the lead.

That won’t matter to Sargeant who had to watch the rest of the race from the garage, further damaging his chances of staying in F1.

Williams considering their options after another Logan Sargeant failure

After Sargeant’s crash in Canada, Benjamin said: “Sargeant that is his day done, the American in his second season in Williams and increasingly the likelihood of being shown the door at the end of the year is getting higher and higher.”

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Logan Sargeant leave Formula 1 at the end of the 2024 season.

F1Oversteer understands that Williams are increasingly confident that they can sign Carlos Sainz who will be leaving Ferrari at the end of the season.

Sainz would be a huge upgrade on Sargeant given his pedigree in F1 and it’s hard to see where the American could land on the grid if and when he leaves Williams.

His management have spoken to Haas although they have plenty of other options available to them.

There have been suggestions in the past that Sargeant might lose his seat halfway through the season.

Mercedes might sense an opportunity to put Kimi Antonelli in the car once he turns 18 as a warm-up before potentially replacing Lewis Hamilton in 2025.
