‘Just brilliant’: David Croft and Martin Brundle blown away by 230-point F1 driver during the Canadian GP

After the procession of the Monaco Grand Prix two weekends ago, there were plenty of opportunities to overtake in Montreal.

The Canadian Grand Prix was eventually won by Max Verstappen but there were a lot of incidents up and down the grid with every driver struggling to keep their car racing in the right direction.

Covering the race for Sky Sports F1, commentators David Croft and Martin Brundle were very impressed with one move during the race.

There were battles through the grid – although Charles Leclerc was a minute behind his nearest rival at one point during the race thanks to some questionable strategy calls – but the DRS zone down the back straight provided plenty of excitement.

George Russell and Oscar Piastri collided in the final laps with the Brit eventually coming out on top to finish on the podium for the first time this season.

However, earlier in the race, Williams star Alex Albon pulled off a remarkable double move.

It moved him up into the points and throughout the race, he was battling with drivers in traditionally quicker cars.

Unfortunately, that was Albon’s downfall as he failed to reach the chequered flag, although not necessarily because he did anything wrong.

It was shaping up to be a decent weekend for Williams in Montreal.

Logan Sargeant achieved a rare Q2 appearance while Albon once again showed what the car was capable was by achieving another top-ten start.

Albon was battling in the midfield throughout the race but had his stint disrupted by his teammate crashing and bringing out the safety car.

It was another disappointing race for Sargeant who is under more and more pressure to save his seat.

Albon was in a fantastic position to score points and worked his way through the pack with some fantastic overtaking.

His move on Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon was ultimately futile after a collision with Carlos Sainz that he simply couldn’t avoid.

Watching the Thai driver’s move heading into the final chicane, Croft said: “Down the back straight we go with Alex Albon. Trying to go into the chicane and slicing his way right through the middle of it was Alex Albon.

“That was just brilliant! He’s got Daniel Ricciardo just ahead of him, Esteban Ocon is the other car involved.

“And look, it’s like Moses and the Red Sea, it’s just opened up for him!”

Brundle added: “Alex there had to do that otherwise there was going to be an accident.

“He literally to avoid an accident had to take them, great driving and brave down the back straight as well.”

Albon was unable to add to his 230 career points after being collected by Carlos Sainz who spun heading into turn six.

Sainz’s car continued to roll backwards across the track and similar to how Nico Hulkenberg was collected by Sergio Perez trying to avoid a crash in Monaco, the back of Albon’s car was hit by the Spaniard’s Ferrari.

With both Alpine drivers scoring points, the only silver lining for Williams was that Haas and Sauber didn’t add to their tallies.
