Former Fish King on Hawton Road, Newark to reopen under the name Fridays today (June 10)

A 20-year-old who has saved a business from imminent closure is reopening the doors today (Monday, June 10) with a promise to bring it back to its old glory.

The Fish King shop on Hawton Road, Newark has been through a few owners and business attempts over the past few years.

Chantelle Costall, 20, of Newark, has worked there since the age of 16 and has seen many people come and go.

The dedicated worker decided to rescue the business from closure and insolvency and took over the management, which is reopening today under the name ‘Fridays’.

Chantel said: “I am hoping to restore it how it was before, it was very busy but then it all went downhill.

“I feel that the shop has been closed and let down by the owners and it needed a change, I am starting it from scratch and hopefully bring it back to how it was before.

“I feel like the customers were very happy and I want to continue keeping everyone happy.”

She had support from investors who helped her revitalise the fish and chip shop and restore it to its former glory.

The business owner left school at the age of 16, without many qualifications and admitted that starting working at the former Fish King shop was never meant to be a permanent job.

“It is amazing how I got here, it is such an achievement, I didn’t go to uni or to college and having my own business now is amazing.

“I can’t wait to see where it goes.”

The new shop — Fridays — had the outside signs changed but the inside has also been refurbished and modernised.

Fridays will be open Monday to Thursday from 4.30pm to 9pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 11.30am to 9pm.
