To the delight of many of the Molineux faithful, it seems as if their first signing of the summer is close to being confirmed. It is believed that Gomes could soon be a Wolves player after a recent bid was accepted.

What is Rodrigo Gomes’ age and height?

Gomes was born on July 7, 2003. This makes him 20 years old at the time of writing. He also stands at 1.74 metres which is five foot nine inches.

What is his nationality?

Gomes was born in Povoao de Varzim, a city in the sub-region of Greater Porto in north Portugal.

What position does Rodrigo Gomes play?

When on the field, Gomes’ most favoured position is on the right wing. However, the 20-year-old is highly versatile and can play down both flanks.

The Portuguese youngster can play as both a left and right wing-back which could help provide cover for Rayan Ait-Nouri and Nelson Semedo.

Throughout his professional career, Gomes has played for Braga. Progressing through the academy since 2014, the wide player made his debut for the club in a 4-0 victory back in 2020.

He has since played 51 times for Braga in all competitions, netting two goals.

For the 2023/24 campaign, Gomes was sent out on loan to fellow Portuguese side Estoril where he enjoyed a highly successful spell.

Is he good?

During the 2023/24 campaign, Gomes had his best campaign to date. In 36 games in all competitions, the youngster picked up nine goals and eight assists. This gives him just under a goal contribution every two games.

Digging deeper, when compared to other right-sided midfielders, Gomes is easily the biggest standout in the Portuguese top division this season.

According to FBref, per 90 minutes, the 20-year-old averages, 0.24 npxG, 0.26 assists, 3.42 progressive carries, 3.75 touches in the opposition’s box and 6.4 progressive passes received.

All of these statistics are in the top 5% when compared to other midfielders in the Portuguese division.

His best game in the 2023/24 season came when he picked up two goals and two assists in a 4-0 victory against Chaves in October.

How much will Wolves pay for Rodrigo Gomes?

News broke across multiple outlets on that Wolves were close to completing the signing of Gomes. The Athletic’s David Ornstein released the story first which was then picked up across the country.

It is believed that Wolves will pay Braga £12.7 million for Gomes, with the 20-year-old set to sign a five-year deal with another year as an option.

Does Rodrigo Gomes play for Portugal?

While Gomes has not played for the Portuguese senior side, he has been a regular throughout their youth system.

The wide man has played matches for every youth national team from the Under 16s to the Under 21s. For the latter, he still plays and has scored three times in six games.
