'About to find that out': Rob McElhenney hints at Wrexham transfer progress as Phil Parkinson meeting planned

Wrexham continue to chase new signings this summer as Phil Parkinson looks to strengthen his squad for life as a League One club.

Thursday will mark two months since Wrexham won promotion from League Two with a 6-0 thrashing of Forest Green Rovers.

Phil Parkinson has masterminded back-to-back promotions as the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era continues to reap rewards.

Wrexham face a real challenge in the third tier though, the first return to League One since relegation from the division in 2005.

Wrexham were playing in the National League just over a year ago and it’s fair to say that the squad needs some improvements.

Signings have yet to materialise for Wrexham since promotion but Parkinson will be keen to get some new faces in through the door quickly.

Rob McElhenney shares Wrexham transfer update

Fans are patiently waiting for incomings this summer and McElhenney has delivered an update.

The Wrexham co-chairman suggested on Sunday night that Wrexham have a real chance of signing goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.

The stopper enjoyed a superb season on loan at Wrexham last term and is now a free agent having left Arsenal this summer.

Wrexham would love Okonkwo to stay permanently but need more signings even if a deal can be done.

McElhenney has told TalkSPORT that Wrexham expect to find out more about potential signings this week.

McElhenney is heading to Wrexham for face-to-face discussions with Parkinson, with Wrexham hoping to get deals done very soon.

“We’re about to find that out this week,” said McElhenney. “We go to Wrexham very soon and we’re going to sit down and talk about that with Phil [Parkinson],” he added.

Wrexham transfer speculation

No rumours suggest that anything is absolutely imminent regarding Wrexham’s transfer activity.

There have been a number of names linked with moves to the STōK Cae Ras though – and most of them are proven in League One.

The first major speculation came in May as reports suggested that Wrexham were chasing three players released by Wigan Athletic.

Enquiries were allegedly made over potentially signing Tom Pearce, Stephen Humphrys and Josh Magennis after all were released this summer.

All three remain free agents as things stand but moves to Wrexham haven’t advanced just yet.

Another player released by a League One club is defender Marvin Ekpiteta, who has been released by Blackpool.

Wrexham are understood to be keen on the centre back, who will be weighing up his options after four years at Bloomfield Road.

Midfielders are also wanted and two Scottish players are on the wish list.

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Marc Leonard is wanted with Wrexham chasing a £300,000 move despite Championship competition.

Leonard was superb on loan at Northampton Town over the last two seasons and Wrexham are now keen to complete a real coup.

That deal could be tricky but Wrexham have another option in mind, maintaining an interest in released Rotherham United midfielder Jamie Lindsay.

The Scot was a key target in January but a deal collapsed before the transfer deadline, so Wrexham may well return for something of a bargain as Parkinson weighs up his signing options.
