'It's done': Fabrizio Romano has just confirmed a new detail about Lloyd Kelly's Newcastle United contract

A new detail has emerged as Lloyd Kelly edges closer and closer to becoming a Newcastle United player.

This is the deal that has never felt in doubt for the Magpies. While Tosin Adarabioyo was also a target, a move to Tyneside never felt as probable as it did for Lloyd Kelly.

And while Tosin has decided to take his talents to Chelsea, Kelly’s move to Newcastle is still very much on. Eddie Howe is set to get his top target, with the 25-year-old very keen to be reunited with the manager who brought him to Bournemouth in 2019.

Kelly is set to arrive on a free transfer, with his Bournemouth contract expiring on June 30th. That means this deal is even more appealing, with the Magpies signing a Premier League calibre defender who can play in multiple positions without having to spend a transfer fee.

For weeks, this deal has felt as if it is pretty much done. All that is left is for Kelly to complete a medical and sign on the dotted line.

Fabrizio Romano shares contract detail as Lloyd Kelly heads to Newcastle United

Now a medical will not be far away, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano providing a key update on Newcastle’s pursuit of the left-footed centre-back.

According to Romano, Newcastle have fully agreed a verbal contract for Kelly to move to St James’ Park this summer.

He adds that a medical will take place next, before revealing a fresh detail about Kelly’s Toon transfer.

Romano states that he is going to sign a four-year deal with Newcastle United, contracting him to the club until 2028.

He wrote: “Newcastle have completed verbal agreement to sign Lloyd Kelly as free agent from Bournemouth, here we go confirmed! It’s done and sealed with medical to follow for Kelly as Newcastle player, never been in doubt. Exclusive detail: contract to be valid until June 2028.”

Strong start to the summer for Newcastle as Kelly deal nears completion

Given the injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, it has been vital that Newcastle sign at least one centre-back this summer.

It looks like they are about to do exactly that, with Kelly very much on course to arrive on a free transfer. It should prove to be a great bit of business, given his experience in the top flight, his versatility and his history with Howe.

While it is not a blockbuster signing, everything appears to be in place for Kelly to be a success on Tyneside.

Another Newcastle transfer is not far away

He looks likely to be Newcastle’s first signing of the summer, and he might be swiftly followed by a second.

That is because James Trafford has also agreed personal terms with the Magpies, with Toon officials now trying to negotiate a price for the goalkeeper with Burnley. Newcastle value him at £18million, while Burnley want £20million. Given how close the two sides are, a compromise feels inevitable.

A deal for Trafford feels probable, while the Kelly transfer is pretty much completed. The transfer window is not even officially open, yet Newcastle are already on the brink of two important signings.

That is great news for Howe, as it will mean the club has more time to focus on signing a new right winger, which is where most of the budget will go.
