'Definitely': Pundit is adamant that Newcastle are going to sign £20m player this summer

Newcastle United suddenly have a couple of deals that look very likely ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

While the Tosin Adarabioyo deal collapsed and he moved to Chelsea instead, Lloyd Kelly is still on course to become a Newcastle United player.

The 25-year-old centre-back is excited to work with Eddie Howe again, as he prepares to join the Magpies on a free transfer.

But he is not the only player who Newcastle United are close to signing.

Newcastle United targeting James Trafford

As well as Kelly, it would appear that Newcastle are likely to bring in James Trafford.

The 21-year-old appears to be the club’s top goalkeeper target, with Giorgi Mamardashvili deemed too expensive.

Newcastle have made an offer for Trafford, while it has also been claimed that personal terms have been agreed with the player.

With an improved bid likely to be on the way, it seems as though Trafford is likely going to be moving to Tyneside.

Pundit thinks Trafford will ‘definitely’ sign for Newcastle

That is the view of pundit Tony Cascarino, who has told TalkSPORT that he thinks a transfer to Newcastle is ‘definitely’ on the cards for Trafford – and he thinks it is a good move.

“Well, look, Nick Pope had a terrible season with injury last year, didn’t he?” he said.

“And obviously they have lost other goalkeepers. Woodman left, didn’t he, a few years back?

“It’s one of them transfers that you are bolstering your squad. Now, will he challenge for the first-team spot? Probably, yes, but I think that’s what Eddie Howe would want, and between £15million and £20million, if they are haggling over that, that will get over the line. He will definitely make that move.

“He had largely a really good season to a degree as in the first few months of the season, he played really well. Then he made a number of mistakes, especially with his feet.

“Nick Pope is the opposite. He is not good with his feet, and he will probably be the first to admit that. He is a very reliable goalkeeper in doing the basics really well.”

Important deal for the rest of Newcastle’s summer plans

Cascarino seems confident that Trafford will be a decent signing for Newcastle. As he says, it is simply a case of the Magpies bolstering their squad.

And given the finances involved, it is a deal that could really help Newcastle during the rest of the summer.

Eddie Howe is eyeing four signings this summer, one of which is a goalkeeper. The Magpies are also looking to bring in a right winger, a backup striker and a right-sided centre-back.

Getting all of those players through the door will be more attainable if Trafford arrives, as it looks like he will cost a maximum of £20million. In contrast, deals for Giorgi Mamardashvili and Aaron Ramsdale would be much more expensive, which would mean less money to spend elsewhere.

Getting Trafford will allow Newcastle to stretch their budget further, which is great news as the club eye a marquee right winger to join Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in attack.
