'An outstanding player': Amadou Onana believes Man City have a serious talent on their hands in £55m star

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana believes Manchester City are currently in possession of an ‘outstanding player’.

There are lots of fantastic players on show at the Etihad Stadium.

Over the years Pep Guardiola has carefully constructed his squad, to the point where it is now packed with quality and there aren’t any weak areas.

Last summer, City made a move for Jeremy Doku, paying Rennes around £55 million. It was a fascinating move, because Doku was known for being quick and direct, making him a fairly untypical Pep winger.

He has just finished his first season at City, and has clocked up 43 appearances for the club and many are excited about the kind of level he could reach.

In the eyes of Doku’s Belgium teammate Onana, the player’s quality is crystal clear…

In 2023/24, Doku really excited the City faithful.

His acceleration combined with his dribbling ability make him such a dangerous player, and he was exhilarating to watch at times.

He is, of course, still quite raw. Doku is only 22 and will not hit his peak for another five years or so yet.

But certainly, the early signs are very promising, and Onana is a huge fan of the City wide man. He said in a video on the Premier League YouTube channel: “(He’s) quite a chilled guy, quite a relaxed guy, jokes around a lot, very confident as well.

“I think you need that, you need that to become a big, big player.

“We are very pleased to have him on board (the Belgium team).

“His technical ability mixed with his speed just makes him an outstanding player.”

Few have tipped Belgium to do anything at the Euros this summer, but certainly, they have players capable of producing moments of magic which always gives you a chance in a tournament. Doku and his City teammate Kevin De Bruyne to name but two.

Doku can become a serious player

City fans can be pretty pleased with Doku’s first season at the club.

It is never easy for a young player to come to the Premier League for big money. And in Doku’s case, he came and joined a Treble-winning squad, with two of the wingers Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva having been absolutely instrumental in 2022/23.

He certainly made an impression last season, scoring seven goals and making 10 assists.

The objective next season for him should be to get more goal involvements, and few would bet against him to do that given the trajectory he’s been on.

If he can keep a consistent end product, as Timothy Castagne believes he’s starting to do, then he will become a seriously high-level winger.
