Report: Wrexham now behind League One rivals in race to sign 'fabulous' summer transfer target

Wrexham are now behind League One rivals Rotherham United in the race to land a ‘fabulous’ summer transfer target.

Phil Parkinson led Wrexham to League One for the first time in almost 20 years and supporters are excited for the action to start.

The Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era has been an incredible journey so far, although the Reds now face their biggest test yet.

Having made the jump from National League to League One rapidly, Wrexham’s squad needs some major improvements in the coming months, with Parkinson keen to plug important areas of his side.

Wrexham have already made some room by releasing several first-team players, including captain Luke Young and defenders Aaron Hayden and Ben Tozer.

Although signings have eluded the Welsh side, a major update has dropped in their pursuit of a League One goalkeeper.

Rotherham lead Wrexham in the race for Marko Marosi

Whilst McElhenney dropped a positive update on their pursuit of Arthur Okonkwo, claiming there’s a “very good chance” he returns to Wrexham this summer, Parkinson is still mindful of other options available in the market.

We’ve said previously that the Reds should go for Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Marko Marosi, and now the Shropshire Star have reported that Rotherham lead their League One rivals – including Wrexham – in the race for the 30-year-old.

Marosi made 43 appearances for the Shrews last term and kept 10 clean sheets but has also played for Doncaster Rovers 95 times and won the third-tier title with Coventry City.

The “fabulous” shot-stopper was in limbo over a new contract however, the club’s official social media account announced that he would be departing at the end of this month, meaning Wrexham could sign him for nothing.

Wrexham must keep their goalkeeping options open

McElhenney’s update on Okonkwo would have been promising for supporters to see as some were resigned to him not returning this summer.

Acquiring the 22-year-old on a free transfer remains their priority, though with Championship clubs lingering, it isn’t entirely possible that he signs for Wrexham permanently.

In the event he doesn’t, it is clear that Parkinson has a contingency plan as Marosi is firmly on their radar and unlike Okonkwo, boasts an abundance of League One experience.

With 60 clean sheets in 220 appearances in the third and a title to his name, the towering Slovakian would be an ideal alternative to Okonkwo.

However, with Rotherham also on the lookout for a new number one after watching Viktor Johansson depart for Stoke City, Wrexham won’t have it all their way in their pursuit of a goalkeeper.

Keep an eye on how the situation between the Reds and Marosi plays out as now he’s officially left Shrewsbury, he’s likely to decide on his future very soon.
