‘Future leader’: Chelsea already believe 21-year-old can be a future captain at Stamford Bridge – journalist

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that Chelsea are of the opinion one of their younger players can go on to become a leader in the future at Stamford Bridge.

The current club captain is Reece James, however he was unable to fulfil most of his duties on the pitch due to a horrible run of luck again for injuries.

Vice-skipperBen Chilwell didn’t fare much better either, and instead the armband normally fell to Conor Gallagher under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, reports continue to state that it looks as if the midfielder is surplus to requirements and will be sold for the right amount this summer.

This could bring questions over the long-term future of the armband at Stamford Bridge, if the worst possible scenario plays out and their two current leaders are unable to shake off their injury woes.

Chelsea see Levi Colwill as a future captain

This could be why it has been reported by Phillips on his Substack that the club see Levi Colwill as a candidate for the role in the future.

He said: “Chelsea have received enquiries for Colwill for months now, and Liverpool are also a well-known admirer.

“But the 21-year-old only signed a new contract with Chelsea last summer, and it runs until 2029. Chelsea even have an option to extend it an extra year to 2030. So the ball is absolutely in Chelsea’s court, and they have no intentions to sell Colwill.

“He’s seen as pinnacle to the club’s future, they see him as a future leader and an option for captaincy down the line.”

Bayern Munich want Colwill

It has been reported in the last 24 hours or so that Bayern Munich are keen on a deal for the defender after just one season as a first team star at Stamford Bridge.

However, the Blues are adamant that he is not for sale, and the fact he recently signed a new long-term contract suggests they have a lot of say over what happens next.

Considering they are seeing a long future with the England international in their ranks, it feels unlikely Chelsea will part ways with him this summer.
