Massive N.J. condo fire displaces 47 residents

A massive blaze that tore through a 24-unit condo building in East Windsor Monday displaced 47 residents, officials said.

East Windsor police officers who arrived at the American Way condos on Avon Drive at 4:30 p.m. saw flames already shooting from the second floor of one of the buildings. They evacuated all the residents and nobody was hurt during the incident, the police department said Tuesday.

The blaze eventually damaged all 24 units in building K, leaving them uninhabitable. Several area fire departments assisted East Windsor’s fire companies in extinguishing the blaze.

“By the time the first arriving units got on scene, the fire was already through the roof,” said Kevin Brink, deputy chief of Hightstown Fire Station 41, told 6abc.

Authorities did not say how the fire began, but police said the blaze was not suspicious.

The New Jersey Red Cross continues to assist 47 residents of the building with emergency needs, from clothing and shelter, to disaster and mental health services, a spokeswoman said Tuesday. East Windsor Township aided residents Monday night with motel lodging.
