Chelsea should now go all out for 'unplayable' European striker after Benjamin Sesko development - opinion

Chelsea were dealt a major blow on Tuesday in their bid to sign RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, so they should now turn their attention to a fantastic alternative striker.

Benjamin Sesko, 21, has been strongly linked as a Chelsea transfer target for this summer.

The young centre-forward is in demand after an eye-catching season in Germany with RB Leipzig, scoring 18 goals in 42 games across all competitions.

GiveMeSport claimed that Chelsea have been prioritising a summer move for Sesko.

However, The Guardian reports on Tuesday that Chelsea and Arsenal target Sesko has decided to sign a new contract to stay at Leipzig.

The Chelsea Chronicle has put forward the name of the No 9 the Blues recruitment team should turn their focus on.

Chelsea should prioritise 26 year old striker

Viktor Gyokeres is the individual we’d like to see Chelsea bring to Stamford Bridge.

Gyokeres, who’s aged 26, should be entering his prime years and his record last season speaks for itself.

The Sweden international scored a staggering 43 goals in 50 games for his club side Sporting Lisbon. He weighed in with 15 assists, too.

Gyokeres is the complete package as a striker, someone who’s great with the ball both to feet or in the air.

The European star exploded into life last season as a prolific scorer in Portugal with Sporting. Previously, he scored 22 goals for English Championship club Coventry City in the 2022/23 campaign.

His career path has been on a steep upwards trajectory for a while now, so now feels like the right time for him to make a huge big-money transfer.

Yes, Sesko would have been a very exciting signing as a 21-year-old with the world at his feet. But Gyokeres is the ready-made goalscorer we’re confident could fire on all cylinders from day one at Stamford Bridge.

Blues transfer links with Viktor Gyokeres

We’ve not just plucked Gyokeres’s name out of thin air.

The Mirror claimed several weeks ago that Chelsea representatives have been monitoring Gyokeres throughout the season. In addition, the report said that Sporting will demand £68.5m for their star frontman.

It would be great to see Chelsea react to the Sesko development now by really ramping up interest in Gyokeres.

We’d understand reservations around his potential transfer fee, but it could still be value for money if he becomes the 20-goal striker the club is crying out for.

Described as “unplayable” by Maxime Biamou via X in 2022, Gyokeres would be our suggestion to Chelsea.
