The Citadel MIF Sawyer Reeves to transfer to Mississippi State

Chris Lemonis went to his Alma Mater to find his latest transfer portal addition as the coach landed a commitment from senior SS Sawyer Reeves.

The South Carolina native spent his last four years playing for The Citadel but will finish his college career in Starkville. After redshirting in 2021, Reeves put together three solid seasons with the team with a .299 average, 165 hits, 32 doubles, nine home runs, two triples and 86 RBI.

Over the course of those three seasons, Reeves had a .368 on base percentage with a .414 SLG% and 55 walks to just 68 strikeouts in 551 at bats. He also stole 30 bases in his career. This past season, Reeves played in 48 games and batted .304 with 58 hits, 10 doubles and a career-high five home runs with 31 RBI. He struck out 22 times in 191 at bats and stole 10 bases.

After making Second-Team All-Southern following a sophomore season in which Reeves batted .314 with 66 hits and 16 doubles, he was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List for the nation’s top short stop. He fielded above .950 each of the last two seasons with Citadel.

It’s unclear yet exactly where Reeves fits into the Bulldogs’ plans for 2024 because questions are still left be answered in the offseason. State’s starting short stop, David Mershon, is a draft eligible sophomore and will have a decision to make after July’s MLB Draft. Freshman SS Dylan Cupp is the favorite to take over the position if Mershon leaves and Reeves could be a candidate to compete there or take over at second base after the graduation of Amani Larry.

Reeves is State’s second transfer portal addition of the class as he joins North Alabama 3B Gehrig Frei. The two have a common trait of being difficult to strikeout with just 48 strikeouts in nearly 400 at bats.
