Newark woman charged with hit-and-run that left Kearny senior with serious injuries

A Newark woman has been charged in the hit-and-run crash in Kearny last month that left a 76-year-old pedestrian with serious injuries, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Sonia Salazar, 63, was arrested by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit Thursday related to the May 30 crash at Kearny and Columbia avenue. She is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim and causing serious injury while driving on a revoked/suspended license.

Salazar was released pending her first court appearance, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 20, 2024.

The victim was struck shortly after 7 a.m. on May 30, and the striking vehicle fled, leaving the man with serious injuries in the street. The victim was transported by Emergency Medical Services to University Hospital in Newark for treatment.
