‘At the moment’: Phil Jagielka shares whether or not Trent Alexander-Arnold should play in midfield for England

Liverpool and England star Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to divide opinion over his best position on the pitch.

The debate has intensified as Euro 2024 approaches, with the right-back named as a midfielder in the final Three Lions squad.

He has been played in that role by Gareth Southgate in recent times, having also often adopted an inverted full-back role for his club.

But Alexander-Arnold has largely played at right-back throughout his career so far, a position in which he has enjoyed huge success.

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot certainly has a decision to make on what to do with the academy graduate, with Gary Lineker very keen to see him played in midfield next season.

First, however, the responsibility of such a decision falls on the shoulders of Southgate, with England versus Serbia rapidly approaching.

Many Three Lions fans are convinced the Liverpool man deserves a midfield role following his display against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but former Everton defender Phil Jagielka is not so sure.

“I’d like to have seen Gareth try Jude Bellingham as a regular eight, if you like, in midfield, just to see how everyone else would have adapted around him,” Jagielka said on The Monday Night Club on BBC 5 Live Sport.

“Because we’re playing Trent in there at the moment – or potentially – for his range of passing, but he’s not technically a midfielder, he’s not technically set to play that position.”

Liverpool ace likely to start for Gareth Southgate’s England

Alexander-Arnold’s passing ability is perhaps second to none in the England team, even ahead of the likes of world-class stars Bellingham and Declan Rice.

The Real Madrid and Arsenal stars are essentially guaranteed to start the opener against Serbia, but the last midfield spot – if Southgate has one – is certainly up for grabs.

Youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton have put their cases forward, with Conor Gallagher another strong option.

But having impressed in the build-up to the major tournament, and having worked on a midfield role in recent England training sessions, Alexander-Arnold looks like he may just get the nod.

Along with Serbia, the Three Lions will meet Denmark and Slovenia in Group C, with the nation certain to go far in Germany thanks to their hugely talented squad.

Alexander-Arnold is joined by Reds teammate Joe Gomez in the final squad, but the latter is perhaps much further down the pecking order than the former when it comes to the starting XI.
