Report: Tottenham can sign defender who's made more tackles than William Saliba for just £30m this summer

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to sign a Brazil international defender this summer.

Ange Postecoglou has made it clear that he wants new players. Spurs have already brought back Timo Werner on another loan deal, but that’s just expected to be the start.

Tottenham are likely to sign at least one new defender this summer, and they have now been linked with a move to sign one Brazilian to replace another.

Tottenham want to sign Vanderson to replace Emerson Royal

Tottenham’s first-choice back-four is fantastic.

Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Pedro Porro were all brilliant individually in the 2023/24 season, and they are likely to be the starters in the next campaign as well.

The problem for Spurs is that they don’t have quality backups in defence.

Radu Dragusin was brought in to solve that issue in January, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement at the back for Tottenham.

One area they need to address is right-back if Emerson Royal leaves the club. Spurs are ready to sell the Brazilian and he has already said yes to AC Milan.

To take Emerson’s place in the squad, GiveMeSport claim that Tottenham are interested in signing AS Monaco full-back Vanderson this summer.

The report has labelled him as ‘one of the best right-backs in Ligue 1’ and revealed that he will ‘primarily be a backup for Porro’ under Postecoglou if Spurs sign him.

Monaco value Vanderson at £30 million, which is reportedly a bit more than what Tottenham are expected to receive for Emerson if they sell him to AC Milan.

The report adds that Barcelona and Antonio Conte’s Napoli have also shown interest in Vanderson, whose contract at Monaco does not expire until 2028.

Vanderson made more tackles than William Saliba

Tottenham target Vanderson played 20 times in Ligue 1 for Monaco in the 2023/24 season, and he was very, very good.

The Brazilian, still only 22, is a dynamic full-back. He’s attack-minded and always on the front foot, but his defending is not too bad either.

For Monaco in the league last season, Vanderson attempted 98 tackles in 20 games, which is nearly five tackles per game. Just for comparison, Arsenal’s Willian Saliba made 48 in 38 Premier League games.

Vanderson has all the qualities you would want from a right-back, and under Postecoglou, he could develop into a fine defender in the coming years.

However, whether Monaco will agree to sell him this summer remains to be seen.
