N.J. surgeon admits prescribing painkillers to patients who didn’t need them

A New Jersey doctor has pleaded guilty to federal charges of illegally prescribing opioid painkillers.

Evangelos Megariotis, 72, of Clifton, admitted to seven counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances in Newark federal court on Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of New Jersey said in a news release. An indictment originally charged him with 34 counts of the crime.

Megariotis, an orthopedic surgeon, prescribed various medications containing Oxycodone to patients with no legitimate medical reason, according to the indictment.

He prescribed the narcotic painkillers to five patients in 2017, federal prosecutors said.

Megariotis will be sentenced on Oct. 15.
