Indiana State transfer catcher and infielder Luis Hernandez committed to LSU, according to multiple reports on Tuesday. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
Hernandez was a major force in 2024 with a .359 average, 23 homers and 76 RBIS along with a 1.114 OPS. The Tigers get a much-needed addition in the lineup with the major power hitter plus, he’s got versatility having been Indiana State’s designated hitter, catcher and first baseman at times.
During his three-year stay with the Sycamores, Hernandez primarily played catcher as a freshman, designated hitter as a sophomore and first base as a junior.
The utility slugger finished up his career at Indiana State batting .315 across the three seasons. In 578 career at-bats, Hernandez recorded 182 hits, 118 runs, 32 home runs, 120 RBIs and has drawn 48 walks.
LSU head coach Jay Johnson is navigating players making decisions on their futures as well. Hernandez gives the Tigers a strong option at multiple spots.
“Obviously, there are some situations where guys are in between pro baseball and coming back,” Johnson said this week. “All of those guys will be welcomed back and have a place on our roster. Even with that, we have a lot of work to do to have the team we want to have. It will have a lot of high impact. I’m not so worried about the numbers. That’s where my head is at in terms of building the roster moving forward and at a place like LSU you can do that. It’s really fluid right now.”
