5 Manchester United players who'll be worried now Erik ten Hag is staying - Opinion

Erik ten Hag will be Manchester United’s manager next season, and despite largely positive sentiment, five players will be worried.

Ineos concluded their end-of-season review on Tuesday night, with it being widely reported that Erik ten Hag‘s immediate future at Old Trafford is safe.

The Dutchman endured relentless rumours over the past three weeks as Manchester United mulled over whether to keep him as manager or not.

The decision to continue the project with Ten Hag has been well-received by most of the fanbase and there are several reasons that it’s the correct decision.

However, despite the positives, some players will be concerned about the Dutchman remaining in charge.

Jadon Sancho

This is the name everyone will have been expecting to read on this list with the English winger yet to offer an apology to Ten Hag.

Despite a decent loan with Borussia Dortmund, Jadon Sancho simply won’t be returning to United now Ten Hag is staying.

This will result in a sale or potentially a loan instead should no club bite on the £40m asking price placed onto him ahead of the transfer window opening this week.

Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof has been at United for years now, but last season seemed like it was his last for many reasons as he dropped out of favour.

The Swede dropped down the pecking order and with an overhaul expected this summer in order to give Ten Hag a better defence, he could soon be expendable.

There has been interest in Lindelof and we expect once a defender is signed he’ll be the first-choice centre-half to sell with Harry Maguire far better to have in the squad, and more valued by Ten Hag.

Christian Eriksen

One player who has voiced his displeasure recently under Ten Hag is Christian Eriksen with the Danish midfielder not wanting to spend the remainder of his career on a bench.

Within Ten Hag’s current midfield ranks, Eriksen is low down and is rarely turned to with Kobbie Mainoo above him, and also Mason Mount when fit.

On top of this, Eriksen could soon find himself further down, with the midfield being a position United want to strengthen this summer with Joao Neves already being bid for.

Altay Bayindir

In his two seasons at the club, Ten Hag has made it clear that he doesn’t like to rotate goalkeepers.

David de Gea was ever-present during 2022/23 and Onana in 2023/24, with Altay Bayindir, therefore only getting one appearance – against Newport County, and even then that appearance only came as Onana was at AFCON.

With this in mind, Bayindir faces the prospect of minuscule or no minutes once more next season and could therefore force a move away this summer thus requiring a new number two.

Facundo Pellistri

For Facundo Pellistri, the dream of being a Manchester United player could be over as he’s just ended a loan at Granada in which he floundered.

Ten Hag made it clear earlier this season that Pellistri isn’t a player he trusts or particularly wants to play.

Because of this and the fact he now has Amad Diallo, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and potentially Michael Olise ahead of him, the time could be up for Pellistri.
