Rohl's cunning transfer plan at Sheffield Wednesday is crystal clear as Owls chase defensive duo - opinion

Danny Rohl and his summer transfer plan at Sheffield Wednesday is steadily becoming clear.

Sheffield Wednesday enter into a crucial summer transfer window, with the window officially opening for business on June 14th.

The Owls have already seen names like Lee Gregory and Reece James move on to new clubs, with Will Vaulks the latest; Vaulks has signed for Oxford United on a permanent deal.

Others like Di’Shon Bernard could follow, so for Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday, it promises to be a busy, but very exciting summer transfer window.

An already-thin first-team squad will need the gaps plugging and then some. Not only that, but Sheffield Wednesday desperately need an injection of youth within the side.

The Owls boasted the oldest-average first-team squad in the last Championship roster at 27.3 years, so Rohl will be eager to add some younger legs into the ranks this summer.

But it seems like Rohl has a more specific plan, and it’s one that’s quickly coming to fruition.

Sheffield Wednesday eyeing Yan Valery and Max Lowe transfer deals

Sheffield Wednesday are being strongly linked with deals for full-backs Yan Valery and Max Lowe; Valery a right-back and Lowe a left-back.

The full-back department is one of many depleted ones at Sheffield Wednesday and so both players arriving will give Rohl some much-needed depth in those areas for next season.

Both are more generic full-backs. Rohl’s current options in Marvin Johnson and Pol Valentin are better-suited as wing-backs and so bringing in full-backs who operate better in a back-four gives Rohl some freedom and flexibility in terms of the shape he can play next season.

Rohl mainly donned a back-five last season. He experimented with a back-four but not often to his success, largely in part because he didn’t have the players necessary to play a back-four with Johnson in particular exposed when he played as an out and out left-back.

Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer plans under Danny Rohl

Rohl appears to be preparing his side to play in different shapes next season; expect him to favour the 5-2-2-1 that served him and his players well last season, but expect him to want to have the players needed to change that up.

That 5-2-2-1 formation was very fluid and could often change to a two-up-front formation. But the back-five rarely changed.

In games where the Owls wanted to be more offensive, Rohl could often change to a back-four, and now having players like Lowe and Valery to provide coverage and more quality in different set ups makes Sheffield Wednesday a more unpredictable outfit.

Deals for neither players are completed yet, and a deal for Valery looks like it may become quite difficult for the Owls with other clubs interested.

But we’ve got a teaser of what might be to come this summer in S6. Other positions desperately need additions; central midfielders and strikers seem like the key areas, with Rohl looking like he’s close to fixing his goalkeeper department with a return for James Beadle, and a deal for Ben Hamer.

On the whole, though, it’s been a promising start to the summer for Sheffield Wednesday, albeit with no new players over the line just yet.
